Citizens have been calling our phone non-stop since we posted the CCSPCA story yesterday and we thank you for your interest and support on this important matter. The public’s response is essential if we are going to affect change at the Cecil County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA).
Here are three important ways you can help:
1. If you are a Cecil County resident, you need to call the County Commissioners and demand that action be taken. You may reach them at 410-996-5201 or go over to the homepage for the five elected officials and email them individually.
2. If you are a Cecil County resident, you need to be at the public budget hearing on Jan 13 2009 at 7:00 p.m. at the county administration building located at 200 Chesapeake Blvd., Elkton MD 21921 to share your concerns. Public comment is taken at these meetings so please be prepared to speak.
3. Contact any and all regional media outlets. Media was aware of this problem since Oct. 2008, but the story hasn’t appeared yet. Here are some numbers to call, but feel free to call others.
A. Cecil Whig – 410-398-3311
B. WBAL TV — 410-467-3000
C. News Journal 302-324-2500
I left messages with the Whig and News Journal. WBAL doesn’t have any reporters to spare… riiiiiiiiiight.
WBAL covered the story, but I must have missed it. I would’ve thought I’d have caught a big Cecil County story as important at this one, but I guess not. I was using some search engines to try to find more information on this subject and found another site disputing the charges against the SPCA. This site I found, Sherman Sham, say it was created by supporters of the Cecil County SPCA in Chesapeake City, MD to get out facts and documents contradicting the false report by John Sherman, a reporter with WBAL television in Baltimore.
It is at http://shermansham.wordpress.com
You did not miss it. WBAL shot for three days, meeting all those who came to see me. The also went into the shelter and interviewed Jeanne Demming until I believe she was asked about the dogs being shot, at that point she declared the interview over and walked away. WBAL has all the film, three days worth of shows, ready to go. They thought Schwertzler was going to sue them so the lawyers got cold feet. Interestingly enough the site you found was set up to counter if the show was shown. As you see it fits the standard operating procedure of character assassination as opposed to addressing the concerns raised. It also strikes me as a pretty good sign that there never was any intent to sue because, no lawyer would allow his client to post that if they intended on pursuing a matter in the courts. It will be interesting to see if they now quickly take down the site or try to put it out there should WBAL decide to show what it has.
The site has already been stripped of all posts, as far as I can see!
Everyone please read!!
In addition to contacting the people that Delegate Smigiel has posted above, heat needs to be put on the Board of Directors of the Cecil County SPCA who have allowed these atrocities to continue. Demand that they take action for the helpless animals in the facility that are counting on YOU to be their voice. Here are just a few you can contact. When I find out the rest, I will post them here as well!
The President of the Board of Directors, Nancy Schwerzler, has been posting on sites as “anonymous” attacking the character of anyone coming forward with information. Seems to me that if she spent half as much time explaining the actions of the SPCA and having her staff take the polygraphs as Delegate Smiegiel offered, this should all be cleared up, right? When I find contact info for her, I will post it as well.
Isn’t it also ironic that the Assistant State’s Attorney, Keith Baynes, also sits on the Board of Directors of Cecil County SPCA–and yet no criminal charges have been brought by the State’s Attorneys Office? I do believe he many be running for office in the future……maybe we should call him and let him know what we think. His contact info is 410-398-6333.
Stephanie Garrity who is an Officer at the Cecil County Health Dept. She sits on CC SPCA’s Board of Directors–tell her enough is enough! Her number is 410-996-5550.
Sheriff Barry Janney sits on the CC SPCA Board of Directors–he can be reached at 410-996-5500. His email is barry.janney@ccdps.org.
Commissioner Robert Hodge is also a CC SPCA Board Member. His contact info is 410-996-5201 and his email is rhodge@ccgov.org.
The CC SPCA Board Of Directors needs to vote out all of those people who have committed these crimes against animals.
Put the heat on the Board of Directors and demand that they take action on behalf of the murdered animals, as well as the animals currently still in the facility.
Thank you to everyone on behalf of the animals. Together, we can see to it that this madness stops!
Delegate Smigiel:
Thanks for answering my post and letting me know about that. I was wondering how I missed such a big Cecil County Story. I’ve come to never expect any real reporting from the Cecil Whig so what little big of serious news I get has to come from the Baltimore area, and that’s rare. I didn’t think I missed it. But too, no wonder the Whig wouldn’t cover it, if they attack a big television station like that just because they’re investigating the story.
Also based on what I see and hearing on this blog and other web sites around now, I would sure hate to be just an everyday citizen trying to getting them to listen to me. Thank you for bringing this up so it will have to be investigated by some serious authorities.

Thank you, Delegate Smigiel, for getting the word out about this matter. Thank you for using your voice to bring justice for all those who went unheard. Thank you for not letting up or backing down.
Thank you to Joanna and the other volunteers, for their courage to speak out against cruelty and abuse, which gives those currently housed at the CCSPCA a chance.
I’ve got some great contacts at WBAL, so let me get on the phone and see what I can do.
Keep fighting the good fight!
